No legal booze in Jimtown
Close, But No Alcohol In Jamestown Restaurants
A measure to allow alcohol sales by the drink in restaurants in the City of Jamestown was defeated by 28 votes Tuesday. 279 residents voted NO to 251 YES. County Clerk Lisha Popplewell said those numbers reflect a 46% turnout of voters in the City of Jamestown. The issue was put on the ballot after a petition was filed earlier this year by a group of local citizens named “Progress Jamestown.” That group’s chairman, Greg Shaw, told WJRS NEWS during our election coverage that he was disappointed with the outcome but he respected the majority’s decision. Shaw challenged Jamestown residents to come up with a plan to create jobs, attract industry and increase tourism. Longtime Jamestown businessman Philip Gaskin, speaking on behalf of Citizens Against Alcohol Sales in Jamestown, said opponents to alcohol sales were pleased the measure failed. Gaskin also said he would like to have seen a wider margin of victory and more involvement from larger church congregations in Jamestown.
